The Evolving Role of AI in Data Protection

February 3, 2025

DataProtection Day is a time where many reflect on the evolving role of artificialintelligence and data protection. Oftentimes AI is seen as a potential riskwhen it comes to privacy, however, it’s important to recognize just howcritical of a component AI is poised to be within the realm of data protection.AI-powered systems can detect and react to threats faster and more efficientlythan current methods which makes them essential in next generation safeguards. These AI-powered safeguards have the potential to be as adaptive as thesophisticated cyberattacks and data breaches that are a constant threat. AIboasts numerous capabilities in cybersecurity such as threat detection, response and mitigation, vulnerability management, AI-assisted threat hunting, and streamlining analyst experience.

Anadditional aspect to reflect on is how to better protect AI itself. While AI isessential in protecting data, these systems require protection too and this isoften overlooked when AI is discussed. AI security involves multiple facetswhen ensuring a system is secure enough to not be a liability. First, ensuringAI models maintain their integrity through carefully curated training data.Second, constant refinement of models to adapt to new threats. Third, aPrivacy-by-Design framework, where a system leverages AI while also respectinguser’s data when delivering competent security measures. And finally, transparency and accountability is essential in establishing and maintaininguser trust.

Thefinal Aspect to reflect on is compliance with AI regulations. Most modern AIsystems utilize a mix of regulated and unregulated data on systems that fallinto the scope of compliance requirements in sectors with their own rules. However, there are common safeguard requirements that should be implementedthat are appropriate to the risk. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)is a good example, it includes many security provisions that aretechnology-neutral, this means that personal data must be protected under thelaw regardless of AI use or not. With this example it is important that goingforward AI is developed in compliance with national laws, privacy, and securityin mind.
